Robert is a distinguished professor at the Institute of Quantum Matter, South China Normal University and holds the DST/NRF Research Chair in Fundamental Physics and String Theory, at the Mandelstam Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa. He is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa. His most recent work is focused on aspects of the AdS/CFT duality, which claims an equivalence between conformal field theories and theories of quantum gravity in one higher space time dimension. He has developed novel approaches towards understanding non-planar but large N limits of CFT, was one of the pioneers of bilocal holography for higher spin theories and more recently has been developing interacting representation theory for conformal field theory. He has supervised more than 50 graduate students to completion.
